Jon Owens Head designer
Hi, I'm Jono, I am the head designer and project manager at Verdes gardens. I have been fascinated by nature from the moment I could walk and was never afraid to get dirty. You would usually find me hunting bugs amongst the flowers in the back garden or out on great big yomps across the countryside with our dogs. My mum in particular was a great influence and channeled some of my energy and childish exuberance into helping her to get jobs done around the garden. As the seasons changed and the years went by I began to appreciate all the subtle changes, and the ways the different plants thrived with their showy displays of colour and fragrance before fading away only for another specimen to erupt on to the stage and become the star.
I spent 10 years working with the very talented guys at Second Nature building beautiful, classical residential gardens across Leicester and Rutland. I learned on the job as a landscaper building all aspects of the designs from brickwork and paving, to soft landscaping laying miles of turf, and planting everything from herbaceous borders to fully mature trees. I also planned and designed aspects of the gardens and grew an understanding of the whole process. I was often the first point of call on-site and really cherished the relationships with our clients.
Whilst at Second Nature I helped design and build some stunning RHS show gardens. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet some of the leading landscape designers from all over the world. We learned and improved each time and came away with fresh ideas, and a few medals too.

Many things have changed over the last few years and all of them have influenced my design choices and personal style. Throughout the pandemic, lots of people have appreciated the benefits of using your outdoor space for entertaining as well as relaxing. Owning a home and having a family has helped me to relate deeply with my clients and understand their needs and the need to maximise every inch of space. I have also had the chance to be far more hands on with the plants and trees often revisiting my previous gardens to gain insight into their evolution and develop my own design practice. And now, I'm hoping to pass the gardening bug on to the next generation.
Establishing a garden takes real patience and commitment, but if you can do that you will be rewarded a thousand fold every season. It is always much better to make your mistakes on paper than out in the garden and that's where I can help ensure we select suitable plants that keep your garden looking great all year. Take a look at my blog page for more tips and ideas to get you started.
We take our responsibility to the environment extremely seriously. Where ever possible we try to reuse or recycle our waste and only use registered waste removal companies. We also partner with like minded ethical companies and only use peat free grown plants. We source local materials where possible and aim to reduce our reliance on heavy machinery. The plants we select add wonderful colour and scents to your garden and also help the local ecology boosting natural habitats and animals.
